Pasteur HEAR 2025 Course: Hearing—From Mechanisms to Restoration Technologies

The Pasteur HeaR 2025 Course was organized from October 20 to 31 byInstitut Pasteur Education DepartmentInstitut Pasteur collaboration with the reConnect Institute. It took place atHearing Institute Institut Pasteur) and brought together 14 participants this year. This research training program explores various aspects of hearing research and the mechanisms applied to hearing restoration technologies. 


The course sessions, organized by Boris Gourevitch and Brice Bathellier, with support from Sandrine Vitry for the practical sessions, were held over two weeks at theHearing Institute, a center ofInstitut Pasteur. This cutting-edge Pasteur Course provides students, engineers, and clinicians with a comprehensive overview of hearing research and presents the latest technical advances in the field. Participants alternated between lectures in the morning and practical sessions in the afternoon.


Leading researchers and clinicians shared their expertise, including researchers fromHearing Institute Christine Petit, Didier Dulon, and Luc Arnal, as well as Michael Bowl and Jonathan Gale (UCL, London), Tania Barkat (University of Basel), Barbara Canlon (Karolinska Institute, Stockholm), Michel Hoen (Cochlear, Toulouse), Cyrille Coudaert (Audika, Paris), Emmanuel Ponsot (IRCAM, Paris), Pascal Martin (Institut Curie), and Jean Marc Edeline (CNRS, Gif-sur-Yvette).

Divided into small working groups during the hands-on sessions, participants worked with state-of-the-art tools, including ABR recordings, in vivo two-photon imaging, dissection and staining of mouse cochleae, and EEG analyses applied to auditory perception.

Among the wide range of topics covered were: 

  • acoustic physics and psychoacoustics, 

  • mechanical-to-electrical transduction,

  • cochlear implants and hearing aids,

  • cortical plasticity and auditory cognition,

  • gene therapy approaches for hereditary hearing loss.


These annual sessions offer a unique opportunity to gain an introduction to the key issues in hearing research, covering everything from the molecular, cellular, and physiological foundations of the auditory system to technological innovations and clinical challenges.
