According to the WHO, nearly 57 million people worldwide were living with a neurodegenerative disease in 2021; Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form and accounts for an estimated 60 to 70 percent of cases. Nearly 10 million new cases are reported each year.
At the reConnect Institute: Understanding the Role of Hearing in Cognitive Disorders
The link between hearing and cognition is a research focus of Project Group 4 at the reConnect Institute:“Hearing and Hearing Impairments in Cognitive Disorders.” The work of Project Group 4 focuses on the most common form of cognitive disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, as well as, more broadly, the interactions between hearing and aging. Hearing loss can alter the way a person interacts with their environment, communicates, and remains socially active, and thus play a role in potential cognitive decline. The goal is to explore avenues of research into the potential benefits of addressing hearing loss at all stages of life.
